Gene Gaines, Ottawa Rough Riders’ defensive back from 1962 to 1969, born at Los Angeles, California. He passed away at Los Angeles on July 6, 2023 at age 85.

Ottawa Rough Riders signed end Ted Watkins from University of Pacific and Canadian/American defensive back Larry DeGraw from University of Utah.

Ottawa Rough Riders announced the re-signing of veterans Jim Cain, Tom Schuette, Gene Lakusiak and Lovell Coleman.

<Ottawa Rough Riders 25 CFL All-Stars 22 before 15,102 fans at Lansdowne Park. Rhome Nixon of the Riders was voted the MVP of the game after catching six passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Jim Young and Terry Evanshen had majors for the All-Stars. Gerry Organ kicked 11 points for Ottawa with Dick Adams adding two singles. Dave Cutler booted 11 points and Zenon Andrusyshyn, one, for the All-Stars.

Tony Gabriel signed a contract with the Ottawa Rough Riders after leaving the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Speculation had him receiving about $27,500 a season, “maybe even up to $28,000”, on a three-year deal.

Ottawa Rough Riders 35 Toronto Argonauts 25 at Lansdowne Park in a pre-season game before 14,092. Ron Calcagni entered the game in the second half after the Riders trailed 15-10. He completed a 26-yard TD pass to Pat Stoqua before Richard Crump took off on a 45-yard TD run. Calcagni also tossed to John Park for an 11-yard TD to open the final quarter. Mike Davis intercepted a pass and returned it 28 yards for another major. He was also picked off twice. Mike Raines, Tim Berryman, Rick Sowieta, Ron Foxx and Jim Piaskoski came in for praise from the coaching staff on the defensive side of the ball.

At the CFL Dispersal Draft of Montreal Alouettes’ players, the Ottawa Rough Riders chose WR James Hood, RB Larry Mohr and DL Doug Scott from the retired list.

Ottawa Rough Riders 36 Hamilton Tiger-Cats 32 in front of 20,129 at Lansdowne Park in the opening game of the regular season. Riders held a 26-3 lead at halftime. Carl Williams got the Riders off early with a 52-yard pass-and-run TD from Todd Dillon. Marc Lewis hauled in a 29-yard TD pass from Joe Paopao. Deep back Will Lewis also helped out with a 32-yard pass interception touchdown. Dean Dorsey had 18 points including five field goals.

Andy Tommy, Dave Thelen and Jerry Keeling, all former Ottawa Rough Riders’ players, were named to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.

Sam Berger, former Ottawa Rough Riders’ Owner, and Whit Tucker, former Riders’ wide receiver, as well as former Montreal Alouettes’ Peter Dalla Riva and Calgary Stampeders’ Herm Harrison, were inducted into Canadian Football Hall of Fame. Berger was inducted as a Builder.

Ottawa Rough Riders traded offensive tackle Michel Lamy and fullback Shawn Daniels to the Saskatchewan Roughriders for future considerations. The Riders also released DBs Charles Gordon and Ken Walcott.

Ottawa Rough Riders acquired offensive tackle Chris Burns from Saskatchewan Roughriders in exchange for running back Darren Joseph.
