Tom Towns, Ottawa Rough Riders’ linebacker in 1985, born at Rosetown, Saskatchewan.

Ottawa Rough Riders signed Don King, ex of the Cleveland Browns.  That rankled NFL Commissioner Bert Bell, but Ottawa General Manager Jim McCaffrey said King played with the Browns the previous season, but only had an option for the upcoming season, thus free to sign with anyone.  What added to the anger of Bell was that the Toronto Argonauts had signed Tom Dublinski and Gil Mains of the Detroit Lions and Billy Shipp and Bill Albright of the New York Giants.

Tom Foley, the General Manager of Radio Station CFRA, was killed in an automobile accident in Toronto.  The limousine that he was in with other passengers was travelling from Malton Airport into the city when it was hit on a ramp from Gardiner Expressway onto the Lakeshore Boulevard by a car travelling in the wrong direction.  Foley was 38 years of age and the father of four young girls aged five to 13.  His wife passed away almost one year to the day.  He was also the play-by-play voice of the Ottawa Rough Riders.

Ottawa Rough Riders signed lineman Jim Cain of University of Detroit.  They also re-signed receiver Jim Reynolds and halfback Ernie White.

Ottawa Rough Riders and Toronto Argonauts played a hockey game at the Auditorium as part of a fundraiser for the Red Cross.  The disputed result went to the visitors, 4-3.  Jim Andreotti scored a pair for the Argos with Ted Smale, Marv Bevan and Moe Racine scoring for Ottawa.  The event raised $1,000.

Hugh Oldham signed his new Ottawa Rough Riders’ contract,  Also, Coach Jack Gotta is moving ahead in his attempt to acquire Dennis Duncan from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

With the imminent signing of Mike Nelms by the Washington Redskins, the Ottawa Rough Riders announced the signing of two import deep backs.  Ray Eppes had failed in two attempts to stick with the New York Jets in 1978 and New England Patriots last season.  The other was Greg Gordon who was released by the Miami Dolphins during last year’s exhibition games.

Ottawa Rough Riders attempt to re-sign Damon Allen was stalled.  Each free agent is awaiting the signing of Doug Flutie.  He is in negotiations with Calgary Stampeders’ owner, Larry Ryckman.  It is reported that Ryckman is willing to meet Flutie’s $1M-a-year asking price.

Ottawa Rough Riders’ free agent safety, Sean Foudy, bolted the Riders and headed to the British Columbia Lions to be with his former Coach, Dave Ritchie.  He will earn $3000 more with the West Coast club.

Tickets went on sale for the Ottawa Rough Riders RCMP basketball game in support of the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa-Carleton to be held on March 27 at the University of Ottawa gym.  The Riders’ lineup will include Ron Smeltzer (Head Coach), Gord Weber, Brian Bonner, Darren Joseph, Glenn Kulka, Brad Tierney, Terry Baker, James Ellingson, Kari Yli-Renko, Anthony Drawhorn, Patrick Wayne, Stephen Jones and Irv Daymond.

Rick Perley, Ottawa Rough Riders’ outside wing from 1935 to 1940, passed away at Ottawa at age 80.

Ottawa Rough Riders completely revamped their offensive backfield with the signing of Michael Richardson.  Richardson signed a two-deal for a base salary of $70,000 plus a signing bonus of $15,000.  Incentive bonuses could earn him another $15,000.  Along with Richardson, Riders re-signed their own free agent, John Kropke, and lured receiver Nick Mazzoli from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The Canadian Football League finalized the sale of the Ottawa Rough Riders to Horn Chen.  CFL Commissioner Larry Smith was in town for the announcement.  He also announced that Phil Kershaw will retain his position as President of the Club.

Ottawa Rough Riders free agent defensive end Glenn Kulka opted to move on and joined the Saskatchewan Roughriders.  He joins former teammates Lybrant Robinson and Ron Goetz, who also joined Saskatchewan as free agents.

Ottawa RedBlacks signed import defensive back Jermaine Robinson who played at University of Toledo Rockets of the Mid-American Conference.
